Stretch marks (or Striae Distensae) are caused by rapid expansion of skin due to weight gain E.g. in pregnancy. The skin is elastic so it can tolerate some stretching however after a certain amount of stretching over a short period of time, the lower layer of the skin will tear. The overlying skin is not affected so the stretch mark appears. Excessive use of potent topical steroids can also cause stretch marks. Stretch marks are a common problem and can appear anywhere on the body.
Does the laser treatment work on all types of stretch marks?
Stretch marks can be divided into two types i) early (or red) and ii) mature (or white or alba). The laser treatment works on the early stretch marks ie those that have just formed and are red, pink, purplish or brown.
How does laser stretch mark removal work?
The laser stimulates the production of collagen within the skin to firm and plump up the skin. As this happens it fills in the stretch marks from below. The fibroblasts in the skin also start to divide. Eventually the skin appears like the surrounding skin. Improvements are even seen after three to six months of laser treatment.
How many laser stretch mark removal sessions are required?
It is dependant upon a number of factors i) number of stretch marks ii) severity of them iii) your skin colour and iv) your skin type. Five to six treatments is common.
Does the laser stretch mark removal process hurt
It can feel like a rubber band snapping against the stretch mark? The cooling gel applied can help reduce the pain.
Are there any side effects of the laser stretch mark removal process?
Although rare, the skin can bruise or blister. Some reddening can occur. Post treatment, the skin may lighten or darken but it should return to normal after a few weeks.
